Dogs really are woman’s best friend, and we must do everything we can to take care and nourish them in the best way possible.
As every dog mom knows, living with a dog is like having an additional family member. Your pet requires to be fed, wants to go for walks, loves to play, and is dying to bond with you.
As a dog mom, you must make sure that your dog’s health is always a top priority. That means regular vet visits, feeding her properly, making sure that it’s physically active, lives in a clean and healthy environment, and everything you’d naturally do for a much loved family member.
Even though we cannot communicate with our dogs the same way that we communicate with our fellow humans, it is important to educate yourself on some things that your dog is letting you know. Our dog’s body language and behavior tells us a lot, if only we’ll pay attention.
One behavior I want to chat about today is our dogs eating plants. As you may have noticed, our dogs often nibble on grass or other plants while at home or during a walk, but the problem is that some plants are toxic for them. Read on as I share some details as to which plants are toxic, what are the symptoms of plant toxicity, and why do dogs eat plants in the first place.

1.What are The Symptoms?
Whenever your dog eats something that is not good for her stomach, she may start throwing up.
Often this symptom will occur when your pet eats chocolate or dairy. As you know, chocolate is one of the deadliest food for dogs, and it should be avoided at all costs.
The same symptoms may apply if your dog ingests a toxic plant. The first thing that its system will do is to try to get rid of it by throwing up.
Some say that if your dog’s ears perk up after throwing up, then there’s nothing to worry about, but it’s never a bad idea to contact the vet, just to be safe.
However, if your dog keeps throwing up, then it’s probably something more serious. Get her to the vet as soon as possible. Waiting can be a catastrophic mistake, so don’t do it.
2. Which Plants are Toxic?
The most common house and garden plants that are toxic to dogs are Aconitum, Asparagus fern, Daylilies, Ivy, Oleander, Sweet pea, Yew, Tulip bulbs, and Lupins.
Other toxic plants include Aloe vera, Corn plant, Dragon tree, and Fruit salad plant. These can be found in nature, so keep an eye if you are passing through them.
Make sure that you keep these plants out of your dog’s reach if you have them in your home or garden.
If you’re not sure if you have any of these plants at home, take a moment to Google each of the ones mentioned above. Look at photos to compare to those in your home and yard.
Consider creating a dog-friendly backyard where your dog can run and play without the threat of the typical dangers, including toxic plants and trees.
3. Why Do Dogs Eat Plants?
One of the reasons dogs eat plants is to cleanse their stomach from foods that they cannot digest. Whenever they are having trouble of that kind, they are most likely to eat grass, which is typically not harmful to them.
But sometimes, the first thing that comes on their path is other plants. They eat them and then throw up everything they previously ate.
Considering the fact that they are not feeling too well when eating something bad, they will eat just about any kind of plant, thinking that it will help them, even the toxic ones. This is why it’s up to you to create a safe and healthy environment for your pet.

Take the time to educate yourself about the plants that are currently in your home and yard. Make sure they are non-toxic to your dog, and if they are, get rid of them.
