Now that summertime is upon us, staying quarantined at home is harder than ever. But while it’s still important to keep a safe social distance from others, there’s never been a better time for taking your dog camping.

Most experts agree that camping is a low-risk activity, meaning that if you follow a few simple common sense rules, you should be able to protect yourself (and others) from contracting COVID-19. That means camping may actually end up being the go-to activity of the summer for those of us who want to get outdoors and enjoy nature.

Check out these tips for taking your dog camping during quarantine. They’ll help you plan a camping trip that will be loads of safe fun for both you and your dog.

1. Choose a dog-friendly campsite

Sadly, not all campgrounds welcome dogs, so make sure the one you’ve chosen will allow you to stay with your dog. Be sure to ask about specific rules that apply to campers with pets.

2. Always clean up after your dog

Even though you’re out in the great outdoors, it’s important to clean up after your dog. Bring along a supply of poop bags, and always dispose of them in the proper place, according to the campground rules.

If you’re truly out in the wild, consider burying your dog’s doo. This will help protect your campsite from predators.

3. Make sure your dog behaves

Your dog shouldn’t be allowed to freely roam the campsite, and if she’s barking at wildlife and other campers, be sure to stop it. Remember that although you’re in the great outdoors, many people are there to enjoy nature and peace and quiet. They don’t want to deal with a noisy dog.

4. Get your vet’s permission

Before leaving for your camping trip, contact your veterinarian to make sure your pooch is up to date on all shots and is healthy enough for the excursion.

5. Microchip and tag your dog

While camping, your dog should always wear a collar with a pet identification tag that includes your current contact information. This will make it easier for her to be returned to you in the event she becomes lost while you’re away from home.

Another good idea is to microchip your dog. This is a second layer of protection to increase the odds of your dog finding her way back to you if she goes missing.

6. Pack extra food and water

You never know how your travel plans might change. Always pack a couple extra days of food and water for your pooch, just in case.

7. Bring the right gear for your dog

The camping gear your dog needs will depend on the activities you plan on doing, as well as the weather. No matter what, you’ll need food and water bowls, a comfy bed, and a pet first-aid kit.
