Unfortunately, the current lockdown situation doesn’t affect only us humans — our dogs have to deal with the changes in routine, too.
It’s easy to forget how unhealthy it is for our dogs to be cooped up because they can’t complain. Sure, your pooch will bark from time to time and scratch at the door when she needs to go potty but mostly, she’ll be tired and spend the majority of her day sleeping.
This isn’t good for her. Dogs not only require daily exercise, but they have to keep their brains working, too. Fortunately, you can cover all of the bases with the following ways to entertain your dog during lockdown.
4 Ways to Entertain Your Dog During Lockdown
1. Take daily walks
One of the benefits of living with a dog during a lockdown is that you can leave the house because you have a legitimate excuse.
Your pet has to stay active for its physical and mental health, so you’re not breaking any rules when you take her for a nice, long walk each day. As long as you remain socially distant, you can be out in the open air together.
With that in mind, you should exploit the situation and indulge your dog (and yourself!) in long, tiring walks. First, it passes the time so that you don’t have to worry about keeping her entertained, and secondly, she’ll be so exhausted she’ll go straight to sleep when you return home!
2. Work on training
Dogs benefit from training, and in fact they even enjoy it. Otherwise, they’ll pee inside and snack on your favorite pair of shoes while you’re not home!
Dog training with a professional is recommended since they’ll be able to provide you with pointers and advice. If you’ve already trained your dog, there’s nothing wrong with putting what she’s learned into practice. Asking your canine to sit, lie down, and rollover before rewarding with the treat will reinforce positive behavior and maintain her cognitive ability.
3. Let your dog chew
Chewing isn’t something we humans particularly enjoy. If anything, it gets in the way of inhaling our food whole! But dogs are different. Dogs can spend hours chewing away on bones and other toys without complaining, so you should indulge the behavior.
Giving your mutt a good quality bone or chew toy means it should last for ages, keeping her entertained for even longer. Plus, the best chew toys and accessories are healthy for your dog’s teeth, which means it’s a win-win. Try putting one on the floor after she’s finished eating or as a pre-meal snack for the ultimate results.
4. Spend time in the yard
Time spent outdoors gives you more freedom to throw toys and play fetch with your pet. Also, you’ll be amazed at how often your dog will wander into the backyard and spend most of the time sniffing.
She can occupy herself for thirty minutes or more, even when, to the human eye, there’s nothing of any note. Once she’s had enough, you should find that your dog will enjoy basking in the sunshine or shade, especially when the weather is warm. Remember to keep her hydrated as well as entertained.
