12 Pet Brands by Women of Colour You Need to Know

#DoggyBlog #Poop4U

Following on from our last post where I shared 12 Black-Owned Pets Brands we’re loving, I’m back today to share some fab pet brands by some exceptionally talented women of colour. You may see some familiar faces in this list and some exciting new ones too – but I think we can all agree, you and your pup are going to love them all.

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.

As I talked about in my last post, Pretty Fluffy is making a commitment to change (you can read it in full below) to support inclusivity and diversity across all our channels.

I’m excited to share today some of our favourite pet brands by women of colour. These are some of the most innovative, stylish and fashion forward pet brands I know. Many of them are small-medium sized businesses that show up consistently with new products and are leading trend makers. From dog toys, to dog leads, matching pet owner accessories and more, prepare to fall in love.

Saint Rue

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.
Saint Rue is the epitome of modern style. Founded by the wildly talented Los Angeles based creative director, Nikki Star, Saint Rue is inspired by street fashion – with the collection including matching leashes, collars and accessories for you and your dog (hello matching bags straps and shoelaces!). With a short, padded strap, their City Leash is one of my all time favourite leashes (I use it all the time) and I’m currently lusting after their Le Bon Waist Belt Bag. Saint Rue is a must for every stylish dog and dog owner.

Alqo Wasi

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.
Alqo Wasi has been a favourite of mine for a few years now – Alqo Wasi literally means “Dog Home” in Quechua, the language of the Incas. Founder Patricia, created the brand to showcase one-of-a-kind pieces handcrafted by Peruvian artists. Their range includes timeless dog sweaters, tees, scarves and accessories – all made with alpaca fibers or organic cotton. The designs are beyond beautiful and the quality second to none. A staple for every doggie wardrobe.

Woof Models

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.
Woof Models is one of those brands that stands out from the crowd. The world of pet portraits is an oversaturated one, but Sum Leung creates bespoke pieces that are truly works of art, capturing your pup’s personality in a fashionable setting. Sum’s work first captured my eye years ago when she was sharing the most amazing flat lays on Instagram. Since then she’s gone on to create woof models for J Crew and Dogs of Instagram. Her online collection now features bespoke portraits, tote bags, accessories and prints. Prepare to be smitten.

The Foggy Dog

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.
If you’re a long time reader of Pretty Fluffy, you know I have the most insane crush on The Foggy Dog. There’s literally very few gift guides I do where I don’t find myself adding a Foggy Dog piece in – I can’t help it! Their collection of beds, collars, leads, bow ties and accessories are just too good. Creator Rose initially impressed with her Foggy Dog X Rifle Paper Co. range, but since then she’s gone on to wow us all with constant, fresh designs for every season (their holiday collections are beyond amazing). I’m currently loving their latest summer collection collaboration featuring Cassidy Demkov prints.

Ari & M

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.
With her pug Ari, Maitri Moody is reknown for her super cute twinning looks on her Insta account Honey I Dressed the Pug. But beyond her ridiculously cute feed, Maitri has harnessed more than fifteen years of experience as a fashion designer and stylist to create her on-trend boutique Ari & M. Featuring matching dog accessories for pups and their dog mamas, you can literally twin with your furry bestie and look gorgeous doing it. Prepare to get ridiculously good looking.

Zippy Paws

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.
What can I say about Zippy Paws that I haven’t already said? This fun, modern, colourful and seriously cute range is doggie heaven. Founder, Jen Glaser, has the most perfect eye for whimsical design combined with laser sharp focus on quality control and safety. With Zippy Paws toys you know your getting adorable toys that will last the distance (and I have a 40kg dog that sleeps with his Zippy Paws squirrel to prove this statement!) Just don’t blame me once you become addicted…

Fox & Bagel

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.

I’m a huge fan of Jen Ha – the beauty and brains beyond Fox & Bagel. An accomplished photographer and designer, Jen channels her love for all things dog with a cuter than cute collection of pins, fabric patches, luggage tags and more for dog lovers. If you’re ever looking for a cute gift for a dog mama (or just want to treat yourself) Fox & Bagel has you covered.

Paco & Lucia

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.

Sisters and animal lovers Alejandra and Pauline Martinez created Paco & Lucia to honour their Peruvian heritage with a collection of stunning fashion pieces. Crafted by skilled artisans in Peru, each piece in their collection is truly unique. Their coats and outwear are seriously lust-worthy. If you’re looking to add a splash of colour to your dog’s closet, look no further.

Velvet Hippo

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.

With a background in fashion design, Shalina Chen created Velvet Hippo with her furniture designer partner. Embracing sustainable, simple and seriously stylish designs, Velvet Hippo beds not only look luxurious – they’re made to last. Perfect for big dogs as well as small, every dog wants to be snuggled up in one of these beautiful beds.

Gnocchi & Goma

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.

Owner Daniella brings fun and fashion to her stunning brand, Gnocchi & Goma. Featured many times before on Pretty Fluffy, it’s no secret we love G&G’s matching doggie and embroidered sweaters, as well as their full range of pet accessories. From the quality stitching to the perfect fit and make – we can’t get enough.

Up Dog Toys

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.
Renown for their designer treat ball ‘The Odin’, Up Dog Toys make modern toys for modern homes. Along with her husband, creator Michelle developed Up Dog Toys as a way to bring modern design principles to classic dog products. Her toys look perfectly at home in any stylish abode and come in a range of luxe colours – like Rose Quartz and Plum. Love, love, love!

Outback Tails X Warlukurlangu Artists

The most stylish, fashion forward pet brands by women of colour. From dog beds, to leads, accessories and more, they have everything your dog needs.

This Australian owned brand features the work of indigenous artists Pauline Napangardi Gallagher and Ursula Napangardi Hudson from the Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation in the Central Desert. With Outback Tails’ dog beds, bowls, collars, leads and dog coats featuring stunning Indigenous art, each product is as beautiful as it is functional. If you love the aesthetic of these doggie goodies, you can support the talented artists by purchasing complimentary artworks for your home through Warlukurlangu Artists.

PRETTY FLUFFY’S COMMITMENT TO CHANGE

To support diversity and inclusivity here at Pretty Fluffy we will be implementing the following effective immediately:

  • We will actively search to include pet brands that are owned by black women and men, indigenous persons and people of colour. This will be especially so for our popular holiday and seasonal gift guides that have the greatest reach of our readership. How you can help? Let us know if there’s a brand we need to know about!
  • We will actively try to use more imagery featuring black, indigenous men and women, and people of colour. Not only for our own shoots, but we will advocate for more diversity in brand imagery provided from our partners.
  • Each month for the rest of the year, I will be offering one ad placement on Pretty Fluffy free of charge for a small business owned by a person of colour – this includes black-owned businesses as well as indigenous Australians. To apply – send your brand info to serena@prettyfluffy.com
  • Each month for the rest of the year, I will be offering a ‘Pick of the Week’ placement free of charge for a small business owned by a person of colour – this includes black-owned businesses as well as indigenous Australians. To apply – send your brand info to serena@prettyfluffy.com
  • We will be here to LISTEN and LEARN. I wholeheartedly encourage brands and readers to reach out to me with suggestions for features, and ideas on how we can promote pet brands from people of colour AND promote a place of inclusivity here on the site.
