4 Tips for Living with a Dog When You’re Allergic

Pet allergies are some of the hardest allergies for people to overcome, and it can be especially challenging when they’re dog-lovers.

However, a pet allergy doesn’t mean you can’t have a dog—you just need to take extra measures to ensure you don’t have any issues. After consulting with your allergist, follow these tips for living with a dog when you’re allergic.

4 Tips for Living with a Dog When You’re Allergic

4 Tips for Living with a Dog When You’re Allergic

1. Groom Your Dog Regularly

A major trigger of dog allergies is when your pet sheds on the furniture, on your clothes, and all over your home.

A great way to prevent this issue is to groom your dog regularly by bathing, brushing, and trimming off excess fur so that they don’t shed too much.

2. Don’t Let Your Dog Sleep in Your Bed

Most dog parents want to cuddle with their dogs in bed, but your allergies might not allow you to do so. It’s just a sad fact of life.

Sharing a bed with your dog is an easy way to cause your allergies to start acting up. Instead, you’ll need to let your dog sleep on someone else’s bed or get them a bed of their own.

3. Replace Air Filters

Another thing you’ll need to do is find the right filters for your home’s HVAC system and make sure to replace them frequently.

Many particles can affect your home’s air quality. One of these particles is dog hair, which can affect your allergies in a big way if you don’t replace your filters often.

When was the last time you replaced your air filter? If you can’t remember, it’s probably time.

4. Vacuum Often

Our last tip for living with a dog you’re allergic to is to vacuum as often as you can.

There’s a good chance your dog spends a lot of time on the floor, which is where most dog hair will lie. To reduce the risk of having allergic reactions, frequent vacuuming really does help.

I do a quick manual vacuum several times a week, and I run my robot vacuum at least every other day. It really makes a difference.

Are you (or someone in your home) allergic to dogs?
