Spring is one of the best times to complete that home improvement project you’ve been dreaming about all Winter. Whether it’s repainting the walls in the living room or re-staining the floors in the kitchen, these projects are essential to making your house feel more like a home.
However, when you have a dog (or two, as in my home), you’re probably a little worried about completing these home upgrades; you don’t want to compromise your pet’s safety, after all. I totally feel you on that, dog mom.
Luckily, there are tons of dog-friendly products that will allow you to keep your pup safe during renovations. Follow these tips for keeping dogs safe during home renovations and make sure your pet feels included in the mission to make the house a home!

1. Choose Pet-Friendly Products
When it comes to choosing the right products for your home renovations, make sure that you’re choosing dog-friendly materials for your project.
This means you’ll have to do a bit more research to make sure that the floor installation won’t kick up any harmful dust and that you’re choosing pet-friendly paint, but your dog is so worth the extra effort.
Doing this research will help ensure that your dog is safe throughout the process and won’t be subject to any harmful toxins.
2. Stick to Routine as Much as Possible
Another way dogs get harmed in the home renovation process is that their routine gets entirely shifted and they may feel nervous and unsettled. Suddenly, they’re not able to roam the house at will or you’re too busy with contractors to take them on their morning and afternoon walk. It’s a tough life.
These things may not physically harm your dog, but it’s not good for her routines to be disrupted. Do what you can to stick to her normal schedule as much as possible to promote a happy, comforting atmosphere for your pet.
3. Be Aware of Open Doors and Windows
A big mistake many dog owners make when renovating is that they leave windows and doors open without staying aware of where their pets are. This can lead to heartbreak.

Keep plenty of water and your mutt’s favorite toys in the room, and be sure to check in often. This will help her feel a little bit more at home with all the renovations going on.
5. Consider Boarding Your Dog
If you’re still not sure it’s the safest idea for your dog to hang out in the house during home renovations, consider boarding your pooch.
If you’re not comfortable with that, you might also consider pet sitting. Maybe your dog can spend a few days with a friend during your home project, or a professional pet sitter might also be enlisted for a few days.
As excited as you may be to get started on your home renovation projects, you need to consider how everything will impact your pup and then make your plans accordingly. A little pre-planning will go a long way in guaranteeing that the renovation project is as gentle on your pet as possible.
