If you’re the kind of dog mom who loves to give (and receive) handmade gifts from the heart, I have a feeling you’ll love this tutorial for this super cute DIY dog bone toy.
Start by personalizing this gift for the recipient. Choose any fabric print that the receiver is sure to love. I went with a camo print for the tutorial, but there are so many bright, colorful choices to really make this gift special for the mutt you’re making it for.
DIY Dog Bone Toy
Supplies You’ll Need
Take a look at the supplies you’ll need for this project:
- 1/2 yard upholstery fabric
- Drawing paper
- 4” circle lid
- Sewing machine (optional)
- Stuffing
- Pins
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Thread
Getting Started
The following instructions will walk you through the creation of your DIY dog bone toy with ease.
1. Fold a large piece of drawing paper in half;
On the folded line draw half a dog bone with the sides being 3” tall, 5” wide between the two lines, and then trace a 4” circle lid onto the top sides of the bone.
2. Cut out the bone and open it up;
This bone will be your pattern for cutting your fabric for the project.
3. Turn your fabric inside out and fold in half;
Trace the bone onto one side, pin together along the edges and cut the fabric into the bone shape.
4. Sew along the edges with a 1/2” of seam allowance;
It might be a good idea to double stitch the edges if you have a powerful chewer. Be sure to leave a 4” opening on one side so that you can stuff the bone.
5. Carefully turn the fabric inside out and stuff the bone with stuffing;
As you’re stuffing the bone, make sure both ends of the bone are full. This is important.
6. Turn the fabric of the 4” opening in and pin together;
You can sew the opening up with your machine or by hand using a blanket stitch to close it up.
Keep in mind that this entire project can be done using a sewing machine or sewn by hand. It’s up to you how to choose to do it.
When the project is done, you’ll have a fun and unique DIY dog bone toy that any dog will love. Because you can use so many different fun prints, this toy is the perfect gift for any holiday or occasion.
