As we’ve chatted about in the past, bringing your dog along when you travel can make the entire trip so much fun for everyone.

More and more people agree with this philosophy as hundreds of thousands of pets travel with their owners every year. According to a recent survey by Kurgo, 56% of respondents said that at least once a month, they take their pets along with them in a vehicle.

However, when driving with your dog, there are some precautions to take to ensure that the trip is safe and comfortable for your pup. Here are some tips to help make car rides safe for your dog.

Dog Riding in Car on Road Trip

3 Tips to Make Car Rides Safe For Your Dog

1. Plan The Route Accordingly

When you travel with your dog, schedule your road trip accordingly to accommodate break time for both you and your dog. Your pet will need to walk around and relieve herself, and this goes a long way toward her happiness and comfort on the road trip.

Longer road trips become more enjoyable when you stop at pet-friendly locations along the way. Getting out of the car to stretch your legs and walk your dog is as good for you as it is for her. After all, this is an opportunity for both of you to experience some new and different scenery together.

2. Safe Road Traveling

If you are frequently on the road and enjoy bringing your dog along, you must make safety a priority at all times.

If your vehicle is old and you’re looking to upgrade, find a new car that is reliable and suits your needs

If you’re happy with your current ride, make routine maintenance and safety checks a priority for both your safety and your dog’s.

Using a pet crate that is crash-tested and safety-certified is a safe way to travel, and so is a restraint like Sleepypod.  In my experience, restraining your dog in some way is not only the safest way to travel, but it may also prevent you from becoming distracted by your pet while you’re driving.

3. Health Checks

Before traveling with your pet, take her to your vet for an exam to make sure that all necessary vaccinations are up to date. If your dog has ongoing health conditions, don’t forget to bring medications and and plenty of water on your road trip. Find the contact details of the nearest veterinary clinic to where you’ll be staying and keep emergency numbers on hand at all times.

Being prepared before you hit the road is one of the best ways to make car rides safe for your dog. After all, who was it who said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”? It’s still great advice today.
