4 Jobs for Dogs That Really Make an Impact
Detection Dogs
Dogs have a sense of smell that is far superior to that of humans. Couple this great sense of smell with an impressive hunting instinct, and your dog could be an amazing search dog.
Detection dogs often work for police departments, airports, and schools. Certain breeds can be trained to detect almost anything, including:
- Drugs
- Explosives
- Specific foods
- Humans
- Bed bugs
- Money
Rescue Dogs
Canine breeds with a great sense of smell and bold personalities have the makings for ideal search and rescue animals. Search dogs often work alongside first responders and members of police departments and the military.
Rescue dogs are a pivotal part of missions where human senses just aren’t enough to get the job done.
Emotional Support Dogs
Canines were the first domesticated species, and they have spent many centuries as man’s (and woman’s!) best friend. This relationship has made dogs the perfect companion for people who may need support and companionship.
In contrast to therapy dogs, emotional support dogs accompany one owner to assist with various mental conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
Therapy Dogs
Don’t be surprised if you see a therapy dog walking down the corridors of a hospital during your next visit. Therapy dogs take on the monumental task of helping people feel better.
When people need a relaxing atmosphere or temporary support during a difficult medical treatment, therapy dogs are the perfect companions. Dogs with funny, loving personalities are the right fit for the therapy industry. These dogs are often used in settings such as:
- Retirement communities
- Classrooms
- Hospices
- Nursing homes
