It’s back to school season and if your dog is headed back to the obedience school classroom, you’ll want to be sure to pack her a pup-safe lunch box. Today’s post is all about dog-friendly snacks, and you might even find that your 2-legged kids will enjoy these, too!
Pup-Safe Snacks for Back to School
Whether your dog is hanging out at home or working up an appetite in the classroom, it’s important to keep pup-safe snacks on hand. I like to give my dogs lots of dog-friendly fruits and vegetables throughout the day, and below I’ve made a list of a few of their favorites.
Pup-Safe Fruits and Veggies
- Orange slices
- Apple slices
- Bananas
- Carrots (fresh or frozen)
- Green beans (fresh or frozen)
- Cucumbers
My dogs also love red and green peppers! Not to worry – these are not hot, and they’re a great low-calorie snack that will get your dog’s tail wagging!
Another great snack that’s high in protein is peanut butter. You can put this on celery sticks or, in my case, I just give my dogs a spoonful of the nutty stuff. They lick it off like a lollipop, and everyone is happy!
When it comes to peanut butter, always check that it does not contain Xylitol. Also stay away from sugar-free varieties.
Snacks to Avoid
Although your dog can eat many of the people foods you enjoy, not all of them are considered dog safe. Always avoid giving your dog chocolate, grapes, and raisins, as these are toxic for your pooch.
I also refrain from giving my dogs anything salty, such as chips and crackers. My dogs love cheese, but not all dogs can tolerate it.
Check out the infographic below for some more information about pup-safe snacks that your dog can enjoy during back to school season or any time of year!
As always, if you have questions about which foods are safe for your pet, I strongly advise giving your veterinarian a call. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, so if you’re not sure if a food is safe, always choose not to share it with your dog.
What are your dog’s favorite snacks?
