6 Ways to Keep Bugs and Critters Out of Your Campsite
1. Put citronella to work for you.
Citronella candles and oils can help keep bugs such as mosquitoes and flies far away from your campsite. Burn citronella candles at your dining table and consider citronella oil lamps around your space. This will help keep bugs away and even help the area smell fresh.
2. Keep all garbage bagged and out of reach.
Nothing attract bugs and other pests (such as raccoons) like garbage and food scraps. Use high quality trash bags to quickly dispose of all garbage. Keep all trash bags out of reach or place them in a dumpster as soon as they are full. This way, the odor of the garbage doesn’t have a chance to attract unwanted visitors.
3. Try some essential oils.
Essential oils are an excellent natural way to keep pests away. Peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and tea tree oil can help, although use tea tree oil with caution around your dog.
Dab these oils on your pulse points to keep pests away, or try diffusing them in a candle burner. Should you get any bites, many of these oils can also be used to soothe itch, swelling, and can even keep infection at bay.
I’m also a big fan of this homemade bug spray. It uses ingredients that are safe for people and pets.
4. A bug net can help.
Placing a bug net around your sleeping and dining areas can help to protect your space. You can also find small bug screens that can be used to cover plates and dishes when dining. Utilize these items as much as you can in order to keep pests from smelling and settling on you and your food.
5. Keep a fire going.
A campfire can help keep some bugs away and will also keep away critters like raccoons. Give your fire extra repelling power when you add some dried sage to it. The scent will help repel pests and can help you stay bite free while you are enjoying those s’mores!
6. Avoid artificial fragrances.
Pests can be attracted to artificial fragrances like perfume and room sprays. Avoid using any of these products around or near your campsite.
Avoid candles with any fragrance other than citronella, and try to avoid using scented body products. Unscented deodorants and body washes are ideal for camping.
Sweet food items such as syrups and candies can also attract pests, so if you use these items be sure they are well wrapped when not in use.
Bugs and other critters are a natural part of the great outdoors, but that doesn’t mean you have to welcome them into your campsite with open arms. Instead, consider these 6 ways to control the situation, allowing you to enjoy your camping time with your dog.
