Weed and Sex: An Explosive Combination?
Stoned sex is a heightened experience, to say the least. While seasoned smokers integrate cannabis into their sex and love lives whenever the mood strikes, if you’re new to having sex high, welcome. Both the cannabis plant and your genitals agree that you deserve nothing short of the best stoned sex experience possible. Read on (a joint in hand is encouraged) to learn everything you need to know about boning and bud.
Why Does Sex Feel So Good When You’re Stoned?
Cannabis is known to enhance our senses, so when we’re getting it on under Mary Jane’s influence, everything is amplified. “All of your senses are heightened and that sense of touch and feel and connection is one hundred percent activated,” says Dr. Lakisha Jenkins, a traditional naturopath, registered herbalist and expert in the endogenous cannabinoid system. Not sure what that is? Well, the endogenous cannabinoid system is one of our body’s most crucial physiological systems. Yes, it’s named after the plant, and yes we have a built-in system for cannabis use. Rad, huh?
Cannabis can also enhance our physical connection with our partner. “Not only are you sharing an activity that you both enjoy, but your feel-good receptors are now activated, so you enjoy it even more,” explains Jenkins.

Stoned sex can make you feel like you have psychic powers, leaving you more in tune with your partner and their desires. Even in casual encounters, a heightened connection with the person you’re sleeping with means a better experience. Intimacy isn’t something to be feared, but a tool in your pleasure chest. Using cannabis during sex may leave you feeling relaxed enough to try new things and ask for what you want in bed.
How Do I Incorporate Weed Into My Sex Life?
As long as you’re both on board, bonding over a joint or bowl can work as a perfect post-date transition into sex. “The level that you’re able to relate to your partner now is heightened because your cognizant function is also heightened,” says Jenkins. “You may start exploring areas of your relationship that normally you would remain quiet on, maybe things about your childhood, or past, or deep-seated feelings that you wouldn’t otherwise share.”
While inhalation enhances touch, lowers inhibition and helps you connect mentally and physically with your partner, if you want maximum body sensation, Jenkins suggests going for an edible. “To get the optimal benefit of touch and feel, you’re going to need to use a form that you ingest as opposed to just the smokeable form. It’s also a longer period of efficacy,” she says. Edibles can take up to two hours to kick in, so if you’re planning for a sex marathon, eat them ahead of time. Dosing depends on tolerance level, but if you’re brand new to combining cannabis and sex, start with 5mg and move up to a 10mg dose if needed.
Another commonly used form of cannabis for sex is topicals. A go-to example would be Foria, which makes a pleasure spray, as well as anal and vaginal suppositories. Topicals don’t work on the penis in the same way they do on the vulva or anus because you need mucus membranes to absorb the THC, CBD and other cannabinoids (the chemical compounds in cannabis). While topicals may not provide a psychoactive high, they do increase blood flow, enhance sensation and reduce pain in the areas applied.
The application for the pleasure spray to the vulva is relatively clear-cut (just read the instructions to see how much spray should be used), and even guys who are not a huge fan of having things up their butt can enhance their sexual experience using the suppositories. “For men, if they want the heightened experience, they will use the suppository even if they aren’t having anal sex,” adds Jenkins.
Which Strain of Weed Is Best to Smoke Before Sex?
We’re all different, so regarding smoking or vaping, the strain you choose depends on what you’re looking for. Weed is often categorized using the term indica or sativa. Indicas are associated with relaxation and body highs (higher in CBD), and sativas are more uplifting and activating strains (higher in THC) — but it can get more complicated than that. THC helps us focus and tune in, and is great if you’re feeling lazy or need to focus. CBD lowers stress and alleviates anxiety, and is helpful if you’re self-conscious or stuck in your head. If you feel like you’re in need of an energy boost, ask your budtender or medical marijuana doctor for a strain high in THC. If your anxiety can get in the way of good sex, opt for a high CBD strain instead.
And as for the method of intake, that’s a matter of preference.? Smoking a joint, blunt, bowl or bong works quickly due to direct inhalation and is an activity that you can share. Edibles give the best body high and last for hours. Topicals, on the other hand, improve sex by increasing certain sensations and blood flow, but they don’t get you stoned.
Use whatever speaks to you and your partner’s needs, and most importantly, have fun (and enjoy that high of yours, too).
